ASHTON — The AFC School Board met on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m., this was a rescheduled date from the posted Jan. 28 meeting, which was postponed due to the weather.
The weather has wreaked havoc on the AFC FFA activities during the month of January, with cancelled classes and activities. Therefore, February will be a very busy month for them.
Board member Tim Henert reported that the Ashton Village Board had requested a grant from the Blum Family Foundation to install an electronic sign at the school.
Superintendent John Zick proposed the following calendar changes to cover the snow days that have been used: make Feb. 15 an attendance day, students will attend classes on March 4, students will also attend on April 22, May 30 and May 31. Then Monday June 3 would be teachers institute, June 4 and 5 would be high school exams. The last day of attendance will be June 5. The board voted unanimously to approve this adjusted schedule.
The fall schedule will have the first day of attendance be Aug. 23, giving an extra week for the renovation of the science rooms to be completed before students return. The planned end date for the 2019-20 school year would be June 1.
Zick also reported that the district had interviewed two prospective principals and recommended the board approve offering the position to one of those candidates. After some discussion, the board gave Zick the approval to offer the position.
