ASHTON — The AFC School Board approved the hiring of the following coaching positions: Krista Heng, eighth grade girls basketball coach; Alecia Spangler and Traci Gittleson, seventh grade girls basketball coaches; Jeff Clark, sixth grade girls basketball coach and Mike Papini, junior high wrestling coach.
Jay Long, president of the AFC FFA Chapter, reported the following activity for the chapter this month. They were involved in bell ringing for the Salvation Army at the Dixon WalMart; they packed Christmas boxes for a church in Franklin Grove and they hosted a Christmas party for members. They implemented a FFA Member of the Month program, Jonah Hilliker was the first recipient of the award for helping with a community service project and participating in other events. The club has also implemented FFA Friday, where members where FFA attire to school.
Upcoming events for the club include: the annual ski trip on Jan. 20 and Quartermania on Jan. 26.
New residents to the area, Kim and Bob Moore attended the meeting to express their appreciation for the great educational programs and opportunities that their grandchildren are able to enjoy.
The board met in special section for a public hearing at 6:45 p.m., prior to the regular meeting to give the public the opportunity to ask questions regarding the tax levy for 2018. No residents were in attendance for the meeting. The board approved the tax levy in regular session. The levy does not raise the taxes, the taxes are set by the county. The levy gives the school districts the full benefit of the levy. It was reiterated that the taxes are based on the EAV of the property. If your EAV has not gone up, your taxes, should in fact go down this year.
