Allen R. "Al" Kreider


MONTICELLO, Ind. – Allen Richard “Al” Kreider, 76, of Monticello, formerly of Ohio, Illinois, passed away at 3:04 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family. 

He was born Friday, May 29, 1942, in Chicago, to Clayton L. and Mary Kathleen (Black) Kreider. On Feb. 17, 1962, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon, he married Susan K. Noble; she survives. 

Allen and his wife, Susan, have lived in the Monticello area for the last three years, coming from Ohio, Ill. He had been in failing health for the last several years. Allen was a Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He proudly served and dedicated his life serving our country and nation in the Navy for 27 years, retiring in 1986. While in the Navy, Allen served on the USS Boxer, off the coast of Cuba during the Bay of Pigs Invasion. He then served during the opening the Naval Hospital Great Lakes. 

Allen then was sent to Vietnam to serve as a medic with the Marines. He was on the air crew on helicopters in Sicily for search and rescue. Allen also was the Navy Liaison for the Gillette Family during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. He served many years as a hospital corpsman with the Marines at Camp Pendleton in California, and retired from there. 

Allen loved grilling for all his family. He was an amazing cook and “Grill Master.” Allen had a passion for reading books; he was a true bookworm. Most importantly, Allen loved spending as much time as possible with his family. 

Surviving are his wife, Susan K. (Noble) Kreider of Monticello; children, Mary K. (John) Oliver of Monticello, Michelle R. (Mike) Blackburn of Dillsburg, Penn., James M. “Jim” (Jennifer) Kreider of Peru, Ill., and Christen L. (Craig) Oliver of Burnettsville, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, Mathew, Mandy, Michael, Wesley, Sarah, Austin, Issa, James “Jim” Jr., Alexander, Jacob “Jake”, Syndee, Chloe, and Hailey; seven stepgrandchildren, Star, Katie, Johnathan, Brianna “Bri”, Tyler, Brandon, Corey; seven great-grandchildren, Marysa, Waylon, Maddie, Kane, Devyn, Kody, and Weston; stepmother, Gloria Kreider of Ohio, Ill.; siblings, Kathleen “Kathy” Dusing of Sycamore, Michael  “Mike” (Jane) Kreider of Rochelle, and Marshall “Dusty” (Kim) Kreider of Kirkland; stepbrother, Brad (Katie) Mathey of Knowlton, Wis.; his half-brother, Jeff (Janiece) Kreider of Plano; his half-sister, Laura (Timothy) March of Ohio, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, cousins and friends. 

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton L. and Mary Kathleen (Black) Kreider; and infant son, Allen Richard Kreider, Jr. 

No visitation or services are scheduled at this time. A memorial celebration of life service will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Miller – Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello is handling arrangements. 

Memorials may be given to the VFW Post 2231 of Monticello. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
