Levi Meurer received second runner up, or third overall, for Master Showmanship at the Illinois State Fair. He won a new show box, $200 visa card, new clippers and a new belt buckle, sponsored by the Illinois Farm Bureau.
“The big thing in preparation is just working with the animal ahead of time and not gong in there the day of or the night before and working with them,” said Meurer. “You have to know how the animal reacts in certain ways and it’s just a lot of practice. Practice makes perfect.”
The contest includes three show rings, one for beef, sheep and swine, operating simultaneously. Contestants move through all three rings to demonstrate their animal handling ability, communication skills and knowledge of each of the species and its associated industry. Meurer placed third overall in the Master Showmanship contest.
