Raiders begin baseball season


ASHTON — After having week one of the baseball seasons games cancelled due to weather, the Raiders finished week two with a 1-2 record. 
The Raiders opened the season with a conference match up on the road against Pecatonica/Durand. The Raiders comeback effort fell short falling 7 to 5. 
Stephen Brooke (0-1) suffered the loss. Michael Thompson came of the bench to single in two runs to get the score to 7 to 5 but the Raiders could get no closer. 
Caleb Drew was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.  Adam Hart and Dillon Lanning were each 1 for 3 with a run scored. 
"We battled back tonight after falling behind and it was good to see that,"  Coach Greg Cissna stated. 
Game two of the week saw the rematch with Pecatonica/Durand at home. The Raiders lost 3 to 0. Adam Hart (0-1) suffered the loss. Hart pitched 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits. He struck out 12 and walked only 2. 
The Raiders were limited to three hits on the day. Adam Hart, David Atkinson, and Garrett Sanford were each 1 for 3 for the Raiders. 
"Adam pitched very well tonight and deserved a better fate," Coach Cissna stated. "We just were not able to get anything going offensively to support him. Give their pitcher credit he pitched well tonight as well." 
The loss dropped the Raiders to 0-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference.  Pecatonica/Durand improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Game three of the week saw the Raiders offense break out with a 15 to 5 win over Kirkland Hiawatha. Dillon Lanning (1-0) got the win for the Raiders. Lanning pitched 4 innings giving up 0 runs on 2 hits. He struck out 7 and walked none. 
Adam Hart was 4 for 4 with 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a double. Cody Penick was 3 for 4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Stephen Brooke was 2 for 4 with a run and 3 RBI.  David Atkinson was 2 for 4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Garrett Sanford was 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBI. 
"Our offense woke up today," Cissna stated. "We had 15 hits and our base running was really good tonight." 
The Raiders improved to 1-2 overall and will face Amboy in their next game.
