ASHTON — The AFC Lady Raiders varsity basketball team won its second straight Regional Championship at Indian Creek High School last week.
The girls advanced to the championship game by defeating Earlville in the semi-final game 59-24 on Tuesday. Jaynee Prestegaard led the scoring with 19 points. Madeline Prestegaard finished with 17 points. Emily Shrimplin added 10 points and Addison Wetzel had six. Lexi Meurer had five assists, while Laci Meurer and Bryce Gittleson combined for seven steals.
In the championship game on Thursday night, AFC faced the 20 win Kewanee Wethersfield Geese. The Lady Raiders got off to a quick start led by the hot shooting of guard Shrimplin. Shrimplin had 10 of her 12 points in the first half. Lexi Meurer had two 3-pointers in the half as well, as the Lady Raiders led 27-12 after two quarters.
The Lady Raiders held off a second half surge by Kewanee and made free throws down the stretch to secure the 48-41 victory. Senior Jade Fair came off the bench to hit two clutch free-throws in the final quarter. Madeline Prestegaard finished with a team high 15 points. Besides Shrimplin’s 12, Jaynee Prestegaard had 10 and Lexi Meurer had seven points.
The Lady Raiders advance to the Serena Sectional with a 26-2 record.
